Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) Maintenance
To ensure your equipment operates reliably we recommend an appropriate maintenance plan. We attend sites for regular maintenance and also for emergencies when an ACB is not functioning correctly.
Schedules to suit you and your site
Each site and ACB is different. This means a service schedule is to be assessed after a discussion or visit with you. The schedule depends on the environment the ACBs operate in and how often they operate – too little use causes as much need for maintenance as excessive use.
Our service plan enables us to service your breaker in situ if fixed or withdrawable or to remove and work on it at our premises. During the service we disassemble certain elements of the ACB to allow inspection, lubrication, repair and testing. We have a range of specialized secondary injection test equipment to enable us to test the operation of the ACBs electronic trip units and their parameters.
Distribution & Control Panel Maintenance
We also offer a complimentary service for your distribution/ control panels. We recommend periodically that the panels are cleaned inside and out to remove dirt and dust. At the same time the switchgear connections can be checked and tightened and the supply and distribution busbar connections can be re-torqued. We have seen many instances where dirt on busbars and loose connections can cause noise, excessive heat and ultimately system failure due to lack of maintenance.
Common faults we see:
- Air Circuit Breaker will not open (turn ‘OFF’)
- Air Circuit Breaker will not close (turn ‘ON’)
- Air Circuit Breaker will not charge up/ reset
- Air Circuit Breaker won’t trip off as set or required
- Air Circuit Breaker won’t stay closed when turned on
- Erratic / nuisance tripping off of the Air Circuit Breaker
Most of these common faults can be avoided by an appropriate service schedule.

An air circuit breaker protects your whole LT system. If its trip unit is out of setting, or its contacts are worn, it may not trip when it must, or trip when it should not. Our engineers service and test ACBs on site, in fixed and draw-out versions, and leave you with a written test report.
We service all major makes of LV air circuit breakers. Where a breaker is obsolete and spares are no longer made, we can retrofit a new breaker into your existing panel.

Questions
Can the ACB be serviced at our site?
Yes. Most ACBs are serviced on site. A draw-out ACB is racked out and serviced next to the panel. A fixed ACB is serviced in place during a planned shutdown.
What is secondary injection testing of an ACB?
It checks the electronic trip unit by injecting a test current from a portable kit. It confirms that long-time, short-time, instantaneous and earth-fault protection trip at the right values and times.
How long does the shutdown take?
Usually a few hours per breaker. We plan the work with you so production is affected as little as possible.
Our ACB is very old and spares are not available. What can we do?
We can retrofit a new breaker into the existing panel, which costs less than a new panel. As a Schneider Electric EcoXpert partner for LV services we use genuine parts. See ACB retrofit.
